What we actually know about interpreting dreams

People have interpreted dreams for as long as there are records. The science is much younger, and its honest answer is more interesting than any symbol dictionary.

The discovery of REM sleep

In 1953 Eugene Aserinsky and Nathaniel Kleitman at the University of Chicago reported that sleepers cycle through periods of rapid eye movement. Wake someone during REM and they usually report a vivid dream. Sleep became something that could be measured.

The main theories

• Freud — in The Interpretation of Dreams (1899), dreams disguise wishes. Influential, and very hard to test.
• Activation-synthesis — Allan Hobson and Robert McCarley, 1977: the brainstem fires during REM and the cortex builds a story from the noise.
• Memory and emotion — later work links sleep to consolidating memories and processing emotional experiences. Dreams may be a side effect of that work, or part of it.
• Threat simulation — dreams as rehearsal for danger, which would explain why so many involve being chased.

Using dreams honestly

No dream dictionary rests on evidence; the same image means different things to different people. What dreams can do is show you what is on your mind. Keep a notebook by the bed, write before you check your phone, and look for patterns over weeks rather than meanings in a single night.
